About PlatteForum

Every good life is built on a handful of epiphanies—moments of deep insight when the light comes on and you see what is possible for you. PlatteForum teams contemporary artists with small groups of young people from underserved urban neighborhoods to plan, produce and exhibit a collaborative body of work. PlatteForum was created to answer the critical need for learning through the arts for Denver's underserved and at-risk youth. In doing so, PlatteForum gives kids a chance to work side by side with master artists who model the outlook and skills required to build a productive and satisfying life. These creative residencies offer exciting opportunities for working artists to create new work and provide a learning-by-doing experience for young people that can open up a new sense of what is possible.

Location: PlatteForum is located at 1610 Little Raven St., Suite 135 in Riverfront Park, Denver.

Free and open to the public

Information about PlatteForum and the Creative Residency Program can be found online at http://www.platteforum.org or by calling 303.893.0791.

The Essence Of Elements: My Search For Meaning.
An artist's description.

My work spans over 15 years of painting, discovering and uncovering. My often used titles, "Elements" and "Essence", are an ongoing subject for me through my work. The works are a direct reflection of the inspiration that elements and essences of nature offer me as an aesthetic observation and study. Some works in the collections use different material like collage, black ink, and charcoal to convey visual substance. The essence and the elements in many of my works show a much more minimal approach to the visual substance and interpretations. Both in their composition and depth (which is by design). Other works completed in the same time period explore a greater complexity and substance that drives my hunger to find beauty through these mediums. Stylistically some of the work may appear somewhat different. However, My intentions are still the same throughout, that is to capture the "essence" and "elements" as the focus of what inspires me visually, the essence of nature. With closer observation you will find the substance of many elements throughout all of my work is related and create a strong visual identity.

"Essense" Collection on Exhibit at Spark Gallery, March 2009.

Through the Ages

Michael Gadlin and Andrew Libertone provide a spark at Spark.

Spark Gallery is the granddaddy of artist cooperatives in Denver, and that means it’s also the godmother of the city’s contemporary art scene. This position has been bolstered over the years by the high quality of its members, who reflect the full range of artistic experience, from younger artists to those with decades-long careers. This fact is being conveniently shown off now, with a young artist’s solo, Essence: Michael Gadlin, paired with Ink and Steel: Andrew Libertone, an exhibit dedicated to a pioneer of the contemporary scene.

Gadlin began painting traditional subjects several years ago; more recently, he’s been riffing off of old modern styles, creating retro abstractions made up of vaguely recognizable things. Libertone, who’s best known for his sculpture — his most significant piece is “Argento Piattino con Pesce,” a postmodern garden folly near Speer and Lincoln — is also adept at making drawings that have the kind of boldness you’d expect from a sculptor.

An opening reception for the conjoined shows takes place tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at Spark, 900 Santa Fe Drive. For information, call 720-889-2200 or go to www.sparkgallery.com.

On Michael Gadlin...

Typified by arresting powers of visual imagery and spatial sophistication, Michael Gadlin’s artistry is an increasingly recognized phenomenon in the art world. Rimmed in spontaneity, his 15-year repertoire expresses a singular uninterrupted brush stroke of Mediterranean, European and Western influences. Pushing the boundaries of contemporary art form, Michael’s work epitomizes avant-garde. Those who experience Michael’s work often discover an ethereal essence captured that defies explanation. From his early years of surrealistic impressionism until now, Michael’s work reflects an improvisational inventiveness that has garnered a loyal following among the art elite. His artistic conviction that “Direct expressionism is the most meaningful reflection of life” has prompted the evolution of an extremely cogent and intriguing portfolio of 21st century art. Exhibiting in select galleries and museums nationwide, Michael has been commissioned by governments, Fortune 100 corporations and private collectors, and has been exuberantly heralded in the press."
